Application Process with contact details

I sent in a mail to the editor at with my resume and cover letter. A few days later, I was called in for a interview.

I had to answer a list of questions, some basic, some personal, a few related to current issues and mainly on the style of writing to be adopted. I was designated to write for MetroLife and cover issues pertaining to it.

Duration of internship and timings

The duration of the internship was exactly a month, from June to July 2013.

First impression, first day formalities, infrastructure

My first day was a short one. I walked in at 2 pm and was given a tour of the office. A large structure, it reminded me of an ancient building.

The department that I worked in had computers lined up in back-to-back rows. I was acquainted with the working of my department and met with my editor.

Main tasks

I was asked to interview people, find stories and write articles. Once these articles were submitted, reviewed and accepted, they’d be printed in the paper. I was expected to write about events conducted, review restaurants and interview people.

Work environment and people

The people were quite friendly. The editor was approachable and very chilled out. Most of the employees were recent graduates and sometimes, even college seniors.

Best things

By-liners was the best part of the internship for me. Seeing my name printed on the paper made me work even harder. The food served at the canteen was a delight too. Whats more was that it was free!

Bad things

Work wasn’t laid out for the interns. Nobody took active interest in overseeing and guiding us. Those of us who wanted to work had to take the initiative ourselves and sometimes, even pester the editor to look at our work. This would get a little demotivating.

Biggest Lessons

I learnt to appreciate the work done by a newspaper. The amount of information that is collected and organised is jaw-dropping. I learnt to behave like a professional, especially on the days we decided to review restaurants.

Overall Rating

8

Accommodation

The office is located at MG Road and therefore, accommodation is not an issue. It is surrounded by PGs and alternatively, hostels. The options for food in this locality are numerous. There are several places to chill and nightlife is exceptionally lively.

Office Timings

The timings were exceptionally flexible and doable. It began at 10 in the morning and was supposed to wind up by 6. Interns would often strut in much later and leave much earlier. Certain other departments, however, followed stringent timings.
