India Today’s Law School Rankings 2017. VERDICT: The Joke Got Funnier

India Today magazine’s law school rankings for the year 2017 are out.

Frankly, you can and should ignore it.

Earlier, the rankings used to be bad. They were getting worse year by year. This year, the law college rankings are dangerous.

It’s hard to find any logic, data or thought behind the rankings. Take this for example: NALSAR does not find a place in the top 20. Neither do NLU Jodhpur, NLIU Bhopal or NLU Delhi. Most probably, none of them participated in this sham of a ranking.

Such is the lack of care by the magazine that it gives two different rankings on its official webpage! This is straight out of Ripley’s Believe It Or Not!

Unbelievable? See rankings 6-10 in the 2 boxes below.

BOX 1

BOX 2

In Box 1, BVP is ranked 6th, BHU 7th, SLS Pune 8th, ICFAI is at 9th place and ILS at 10th.

In Box 2, BVP is ranked 6th, SLS Pune becomes number 7, ICFAI number 8 and ILS number 10. GNLU is at the 10th place.

BHU loses out due to ‘technical error’ I guess.

To be frank, and I am not exaggerating or making a joke here; India Today deserves to be sent a legal notice for this.

The full rankings can be accessed here.

  1. Tanuj Sir, we request you to please do a ranking (including non-NLU options). Students and our parents have very little guidance to make the life-changing decision on choosing the right law school, especially those in smaller towns. In some coaching centres career counselllors go by India Today rankings. It is particularly confusing whether we should choose a non-NLU like Symbiosis, Amity and Jindal over a new NLU.

Also, along with rankings kindly comment on placements, infra, campus life, faculty etc.

    Thanks.

    • India Today rankings are so confusing.
I really would like to request Tanuj Sir to do a ranking, especially with regards to campus placements in the past 2-5 years. Apparently very few tier-2 colleges (or lower) reveal any placement data/statistics.

I wish to pursue corporate law and am having a tough time deciding between GLC Mumbai and ILS Pune since GLC is not known for corporate placements while ILS seems to be degrading (at least in terms of percentage of students getting jobs; not so much about package).

These ranking are such a mess! If only they could learn from QS or USnews.
