Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere”- these inspiring words of Martin Luther King Jr. concluded the film Jolly LLB 2 and will begin my review of this movie.

The Akshay Kumar and Huma Qureshi starrer movie is a sequel of 2013, Jolly LLB movie and is directed by Subhash Kapoor.

Storyline and characterization

The movie depicts the story of a struggling yet ambitious lawyer Jagdishwar Mishra aka Jolly (Akshay Kumar) who desires of having his own chamber.

He is seen working as the 15th assistant of a reputed senior advocate who treated him as his domestic servant rather than utilising his services for legal purpose.

His ardent desire of having his own chamber induced him to cheat a lady (Hina) who handed him two lakhs in a belief that her case would be defended by his senior advocate.

On the discovery of truth, the lady felt so heart-broken and helpless that she committed suicide. This was the turning point in Jolly’s life as well as his career.

He decided to fight the case of the deceased lady who wanted an answer for the death of his innocent husband. Jolly had to pass through many obstacles posed by the defendant side which comprised of a powerful senior police officer who was alleged of killing her husband.

The defence lawyer (Annu Kapoor) gave his best to save the police officer but it was Jolly who emerged victorious as he proved that the death of Hina’s husband was a pre-planned murder given the shape of a police encounter.

Jolly regained the lost love and trust of his father (a retired stenographer) and erased those scars which made him lose his true character and identity. He was constantly supported by his wife (Huma Qureshi) during his dark phase.

With such an impressive plot, this movie engaged me right from the first frame. The bulk of the scenes have been shooted in a courtroom which put life in it.

The Hilarious acting of Justice Sunderlal Tripathi (Saurabh Shukla) is the source of that life making it a perfect bollywood courtroom comedy drama film. He has to dance at his daughter’s wedding and he practiced his steps inside the court.

He even resumed the court proceedings at the stroke of the midnight hour. Indeed he was a very cool judge on that note.

Though the way the court proceedings have been displayed is quite far from reality, but the mockery of the law and the legal system that has been made is beautifully depicted and is proximate to reality.

Highlights of the movie

The highlight of the movie was stolen by the judge himself whose final verdict on the case was worth remembering. He held the accused liable for murder and emphasised the role of judiciary in the state.

He stated that people take recourse to courts in order to resolve their conflicts and issues despite of knowing the large pendency of cases and delay in the justice delivery system.

He has specifically mentioned that more than 3 crore cases are pending in the hands of just 21,000 judges. (This stat itself speaks of the burden that judiciary is carrying on its shoulders).

The judge even said that people believe that judiciary is going to listen them and provide them justice when the other organs of the state i.e. the legislature and the executive closes their eyes and ears. It is the duty of the judge to maintain that belief and trust.

The eloquent manner used by Akshay while presenting his evidences and cross- examining the witnesses was another highlight of the movie.

Things to learn

1. As a law student, I learnt that my job is not over after completing five year law course. The real struggle begins after that period.

2. People prefer experienced litigators to defend their case and are even ready to pay hefty amount for that purpose. (Litigation as a career can fetch you money but it will come with time and experience. So, my fellow law companions have patience if you opt for this field.)

3. The condition of our district and high courts is not good. It requires serious renovation.

4. Emotions play a vital role in the field of law.
